Polly
A One-Night-Only, Semi-Staged Reading
John Gay
Monday 21st November 2016
The Jack Studio Theatre
The adventure continues…
Macheath has been transported to the West Indies… Polly Peachum embarks on a life-changing adventure in order to be reunited with her famous highwayman.
Initially banned by the Lord Chamberlain for being a “filthy and libellous work”, Polly was not performed in Gay’s life time, though it was published and earned Gay several thousand pounds. After its first performance in 1777 it became an instant hit.
Polly is presented in this one-night-only semi-staged performance alongside our Beggar’s Opera offering a unique opportunity to see these two sister plays together.

Polly...
Polly is a ballad opera with text by John Gay and music by Johann Christoph Pepusch. It is a sequel to Gay's The Beggar's Opera. Due to censorship, the opera was not performed in Gay's lifetime.
However, the censorship did not affect Gay much — on the contrary it proved as excellent advertisement. The play was published by subscription in 1729, and Gay earned several thousand pounds.
It had its world premiere on 19 June 1777 at the Haymarket Theatre in London. A revised and edited version of the score by Clifford Bax and Frederic Austin premiered on 30 December 1922 at the Kingsway Theatre in London
